Inauguration of Malevaje Tango School during the Neighborhood Tango Testival of La Boca, featuring Nelly Omar, Osvaldo Bayer, and Leopoldo Federico (2011)a

These are the godparents of a tango school opened in the Boca neighborhood, on the other side of town from Almagro. The sequence shows three historic figures in tango history who volunteered their time to come and play in this independently run community-oriented tango club and become the godparents of this grassroots initiative. La Boca is known as the most touristy neighborhood for tango in the city. This club represents a local effort to rebuild an identity for tango in the neighborhood that looks beyond tango for-export cultural models.

Milonga en el Teatro Verdi (2012)
Festival de Tango de la Republica de la Boca

This is a short sequence I made for teaching purposes to give my students a feel for what tango dancing is like in the context of a local milonga (tango dance). I shot this particular scene in 2012 during a neighborhood tango festival organized by local musicians in the Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires. This festival is just one of the many neighborhood festivals that occur annually around the city to celebrate and bring visibility to local scenes and local artists.  The venue is a historic local neighborhood theater in this neighborhood called the Teatro Verdi. This event was free and open to the public.
